Payment is made in full on arrival in New Zealand Dollars (NZD). We accept Visa and MasterCard Credit and Debit Cards, Eftpos, Cash and Travelers Cheques. Customers choosing to pay by EFTPOS, Cash or Travellers Cheques, it is compulsory for Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) to be accepted at the time of rental. A Visa or MasterCard Credit/Debit Card will also be required for security purposes.
NOTE: In all cases the credit card holder must be named as the main hirer and will be required to sign either the rental agreement or by prior approval, complete our credit card authorization form.
The use of Debit/Credit Card will incur a 2.5% surcharge on the full cost of rental.
East Coast Car Rentals will pre-authorise an amount up to the chosen excess on the hirers credit card. The pre-authorisation amount will be held by your credit card issuing bank and will automatically be released by your bank. Please allow up to 28 days for the funds to be released by your bank. Debit Cards and International issued Credit Cards may take longer.
Hirers not using the credit card nominated for security as their payment method will automatically have the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) added to their rental at the prevailing rate.

You and any authorised driver must only use the vehicle on a road which is properly formed and sealed.
Vehicles may be taken to the South Island but must be returned to Auckland. Travel on the inter-island ferry is entirely at the renter’s risk. Vehicles are not to be taken on all beaches including Ninety Mile Beach, Coast Road to Russell, Lake Waikeramoana Rd SH 38 or any unsealed Roads. Vehicles are not to be taken above the snow line.
Travel on beaches or through streams, dams, rivers or flood waters is prohibited at all times.
NOTE: Travel to the South Island is not permitted from 1 May through to 31 October. Customers will be in breach of contract if travel to the South Island occurs during these dates.
It can be challenging for customers to understand the possible liability they will incur if they have an accident in a rental vehicle. Many consumers are unaware that car rental 'insurance' is very different to the insurance they purchase for their private vehicle and that excesses are much higher. East Coast Car Rentals provides the following option to reduce your excess in the event of damage.
Windscreen and Tyre Cover protects the renter for damage to these items. Windscreen means "front" windscreen. Windscreen damage refers to chips, cracks or stars to the windscreen. "Tyre" means any one of the four tyres on the vehicle at any given time. Tyre damage refers to punctures, cuts and abrasions due to normal driving conditions. In the event of damage to these items, there will be no charge. The cost is $5.00 per day.
Loss Damage Waiver protects you against damage caused as a result of Multi Vehicle Accidents and single vehicle accidents. You are also covered for hail and storm damage (except flood damage), theft, fire and animal damage, to the reduced liability amount where LDW is purchased.
Each driver must be listed on the Rental Agreement and must present their drivers license at time of collection. An additional driver/hirer fee of $11 per driver will apply. Maximum 4 drivers per rental.
Drivers aged between 21 and 25 years of age (as of the last day of the rental period) are still entitled to hire, however are subject to a compulsory, additional $8.80 per day surcharge.
We can rent to drivers over the age of 80 subject to the approval of the renting officer.
Drivers who hold a valid New Zealand Provisional License may rent from East Coast Car Rentals under the following provisions;
Learner Drivers (L Plate) are not permitted to rent vehicles with East Coast Car Rentals.
To ensure the smoothest possible rental transaction we will allocate a specific vehicle for your use prior to your arrival, thus removing its availability from our fleet. This process generally takes place 7 days prior to collection. Therefore the following cancellation fees will apply.
Confirmed reservations can be altered and are subject to availability. Changes to the length of rental may alter daily rates or any other specially discounted offers. Please advise staff on arrival if the 'return' date is to be different than that booked. If during the rental an extended hire is required, the hirer must contact our Reservations office on 0-800-447-658 between 7am and 4pm. All extensions must be paid for in advance of the extension period. Please have your booking/reservation number available when you call.
